Hum do I really need to find some excuse not to scan my preferred card right away? I seem to remember Catalinas triggering off the non-preferred price regardless. My Jewel doesn’t allow coupons at self-checkout without a cashier coming over to clear it, so that’s not a good option either

Your right it does go off non-preferred price.
Non-preferred prices may vary from store to store. I like to scan the card last to make sure I have hit the mark for catalina to print. To be on the safe side with that.
In regards to this deal, yes you could go through a “regular cashier” and scan your card first.
